GIVING

WHY DO WE GIVE?

At Root River Church, we believe in practicing the Biblical principle of tithing. We get the word “tithe” from the Hebrew word meaning “tenth”. It’s understood as a tenth of a person’s income given back to God through the local church.

In the Old Testament we see Abraham & Jacob offering a tenth to God (Genesis 14 & 28); through Moses, God institutes a system of tithing through the law (Deuteronomy 12, 14, & 26); and even the prophets rebuke God’s people for failing to do so (Malachi 3:8). Then, as we enter the New Testament, Jesus begins challenging the religious leaders’ motives for giving (Matthew 23).

When we bring our tithes & other offerings to God, we should do so out of a heart of obedience, worship, and generosity — not reluctantly or under compulsion (2 Corinthians 9:6-10).

As you navigate what it looks like for you and your family to give sacrificially, do so prayerfully, with a cheerful heart, and know that whatever the gift, it will honor God as it’s used to multiply his Kingdom!
